UPDATE: An old friend is putting his and his shop’s resources at my disposal to help me fix it. I’d dropped him a line to see how much it would cost to have him do it, but he suggested this instead. I feel much better tearing into something like this under his guidance, and with a shop’s superior tools available, than hacking away at it in my own garage. I’m much more confident that I’ll actually drive the thing out of there.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I’m feeling like I’m in over my head on this. I was OK with finishing the reassembly, swapping some body parts, and fixing some rust. But now that I’ve lost both lifters in cylinder #2, and tasks that should be simple like pulling the lower radiator hose to drain the coolant are proving difficult, we’re seriously considering moving it along to more capable hands than mine. (These additional problems popped up after we bought it, and I do NOT blame the previous owner in any way).

It’s still a great truck with a ton of potential. The usual problem areas for rust are already fixed, and I have all the interior bits it needs to be complete. But the engine work is overwhelming me, despite having already bought the parts to do it (which I’d include).

So...are you trying to sell this on Oppositelock or asking if you should?

In between. Putting out feelers to see if there’s interest, really.

the jeep inline 6 is an easy engine to work on. it just takes time, and attention to detail. lifters are cheap. cams are cheap too(there are not a lot of options for the jeep i6). If you are scared of the work a jeep i6 will run for YEARS 1 cylinder down(its a jeep thing).

look. once you get some experience working on it, the jobs wont seem as daunting.

I’ve got the parts. I’m just being stopped by rusty bolts, hoses that won’t detach, and all kinds of other minor issues piling up to overwhelm me.

yeah, but youre going to run into those problems regardless of what you pick up. PB blaster and wd40 are your best friends when you work on old junk.

when you want to cruise something around, you find a way to make it happen.

determination. it will get you places.

Get your head back in the game! Now get out there with a box cutter and split that hose right down the center!!

this thing turned in to project car hell quickly. I would say if you have the money and don’t need the car immediately you need to make some new friends in the local jeep club and offer some pizza and beer to get some experienced hands in to help. That’ll make it a lot easier and hopefully even fun!

I would not give up. I sold it because I wanted to do the Raider instead. So far I have had the top end apart twice. It happens. Knuckle down and get it done. If internal engine work seems to much, you can buy a complete 4.0 for practically nothing. Swap it in and good to go.

(I realize this sounds easy to say...but it would not be tough) Also....rusted bolts. Drill, tap , replace.

Well, if you can wait till the spring/summer, I plan on selling my ‘96 5 speed 4.0L XJ Cherokee.

It’s got some quirks like door locks and wonky gauges but no rust and a solid motor.

I love it but I want/need something newer. My spare “fixin” time now goes to my bike and now my gf’s bike as well.

An XJ is high on the list of what would potentially replace it. Could get a much newer one, and there are a lot more XJ parts out there than MJ.
